Opening

The title alludes to the Dylan Thomas’ poem "Do not go gentle into that good night", which deeply affected
me as a teenager coping with the loss of my grandmother; it resonates still as I age. The work addresses
themes of invisibility, decline, isolation, and family dynamics. The pieces are wall-mounted art quilts,
created with fabric and techniques rooted in tradition, care and family, but employed in a contemporary,
non-traditional way. Both figurative and abstract approaches are used to communicate ideas and emotion.
New Brunswick’s aging population has raised generations and invested in our province; this exhibit gives
visibility to that community. Experiencing the series helps seniors feel recognized, while also challenging
the viewer to reconsider older adults as something other than hospital bed blockers. The work invites the
viewer to have an emotional connection through the comfort, warmth and heritage of the quilted form,
while simultaneously experiencing the tension and contradictions within the imagery.
